In Nagaland

My Dad was posted to Nagaland while I was in 4th standard , I fondly remember my experience ….

Nagaland is a lush green mountainous region , untouched by pollution , flocked by wildlife , where the sky is vibrant with colours of stars , and rivers are ripe with water .

I distinctly remember the short sized bananas that grow in wild in the region , so much so that the entire mountain at times looks like a jungle of banana trees.

Journey to Nagaland :

There was a 2 day train journey from delhi to Dimapur . There were torrential monsoon rains pourinh heavily , an army jeep took us to chakama , where my dad was posted to ( 7 INF DIV) . I also remember the tent guest rooms , where the entire mess was made inside tents, along with the furniture , carpets and accompanying accessories such as lamps , flowers vases etc !

Naga Bazar .

Out of these all , the most unforgettable is the Naga Bazar . It is so because I saw for the first time in my life , frogs sewn with thread like a necklace , kicking , half-alive , being sold on roadside shops , worms ,  turtles , rather almost all livings things save humans !!! Nagas definitely have the most wide ranging cuisine encompassing the entire spectrum of living things.

Food :
Nagaland-Tribal-Food
Happy meals @ nagaland
Rice is their staple food, which is taken with meat gravy .People prefer boiled or smoked food more.  Food includes frogs , snakes, snails, rats, squirrels, dogs, cats,  bee larvae, shrimps, red ants, mithuns, buffaloes, deer, spiders, birds, crabs, monkeys and almost everything that is wild , since they are mostly hunters .
It is believed that the quality of the animal they eat , becomes part of their self.
While I was there I observed that the cooking is done in a large pot with leaves , chillies and ginger( pungent smell ) , Bamboo shoots . When comes a guest they slaughter an animal such as a buffalo , dog or boar and drain the blood in vessel to be solidified later ( just as one does with milk to make paneer  , that is also consumed later)  .  the meat is smoked for long hours and served with spinach like leaves and rice . Yes it stinks pretty bad at first , but the I have learned to finish the food on plate , hence ate it all :p

myriad Tribes :
People of Nagaland are of Tibeto-Burmese origin, intrinsically they are fierce warriors  , with linguistic features often mutually intelligible even between the tribes of adjacent villages .
